New Open Division added to national rankings

In an attempt to create a top 500 national open rankings, the USTA is proud to announce the regulations and ranking requirements for this new division. It is the first time that results from tournaments played in 4 different divisions (the juniors, the collegiate, the adults & the professional circuits) will be combined into a single ranking system as shown below:

National Adult Open Division Ranking Requirements effective 01/01/02

Men’s & Women’s Open Singles and Doubles Requirement –

One Category I USTA Championship plus two of the following tournaments:

– Any Open Division Sectional Championship

– Any Category II USTA Championship

– Any USTA Satellite, Futures, or Challenger professional tournament, including the qualifying

– Any of the three ITA Division I National Championships (NCAA Championships, ITA All-American Championships, ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Tennis Championships)

– Level 1 or 2 events, which are non-team events, in the Boys’ & Girls 18 age division

– Three USTA professional tournaments consisting of Satellite, Futures, or Challenger tournaments (including the qualifying rounds) may be substituted for one Category I USTA Championship.

– A second Category I USTA Championship may be substituted for the two other tournaments.

ALTHOUGH THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS, THE PRIMARY REQUIREMENT FOR A RANKING IS PLAYING IN ONE OF THE 4 OPEN USTA CATEGORY I CHAMPIONSHIPS LISTED BELOW:
1- HARD COURTS – BALBOA TENNIS CLUB, SAN DIEGO, CA – JUNE 9-16
2- CLAY COURTS – JIMMY EVERT TENNIS CENTER, FT. LAUDERDALE, FL – JULY 5-11
3- GRASS COURTS – INTERNATIONAL HALL OF FAME, NEWPORT, RI – SEPTEMBER 1- 8
4- INDOORS – USTA NATIONAL TENNIS CENTER, NEW YORK, NY – DECEMBER 26-30

NOTE: WINNERS OF THE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SINGLES DRAW OF ANY OF THE FOUR CATEGORY I OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS WILL BE AWARDED A WILD CARD TO THE MAIN DRAW OF A MUTUALLY ACCEPTABLE SINGLES EVENT OF A USTA PROFESSIONAL CIRCUITS TOURNAMENT. TEAM WINNERS OF THE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S DOUBLES DRAW OF ANY CATEGORY I OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS WILL BE AWARDED A WILD CARD TO THE MAIN DRAW OF A MUTUALLY ACCEPTABLE DOUBLES EVENT OF A USTA PROFESSIONAL CIRCUITS TOURNAMENT
